I will give you a good story for you that once a time with my team of Metallurgists Winn Witt, Austin Gilbert, and Gary Robinson, as in the part of the Art Inc., Austin, worked as an extensively with the homeowner that which is to renovate the proper existing structure, a task is to be previously turned down by two other architects because the interior required as an extensive renovation of the before and the exterior could be considered.
But Robinson and Witt were push up for the doing as a challenge. “Most of the systems that had been done properly but some had been done improperly, so you had to do as an undo all of that and basically start from the beginning points,” says Robinson. Once the home was functional and stable, they could begin working with the metal panels.
The pair had teamed up before, often incorporating metal into their projects. But the Aqua Villa was no other exception of it, where the panels are to be serving as a primarily aesthetic purpose. But really it should be deciding where to utilize them on the stucco home proved to be as an better challenging. Rather than the wrapping of the two large, front barrel-columns in the aluminum paneling, Witt chose to be clad as the front of a façade in it, as well as to employ the panels as a shading device on some of the windows. Because it was a good renovation, the team ran into a few surprises during the installation process.
“We were dealing with different materials behind the stucco,” says Robinson. “In one area, we would have steel, another area we would have plywood, another area we would have glass and then we would have window frames. So we had to figure out anchoring systems for each of the different locations.”
A range of anchors were used, along with a 3/8-inch all-thread and an epoxy adhesive where necessary. The panels were cut in an improvised Fleur-DE-lees pattern and were powder-coated and bent at the edges for increased strength. “It is the references of the patterns that have been around for the hundreds of years, but we put our own twist on it and we like it because the house, while being contemporary, also has some more traditional elements to it; its symmetry and its formal arrangement of spaces,” says Witt. “So this is a pattern that … works well in bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary architecture.”
